Elementary Education Students’ Understanding Levels of Vectors and Instructors’ Predictions about Their Responses

The purpose of the study is to investigate the understanding levels of students studying in elementary education and taking the subject of vectors in compulsory general physics course in the 2nd grade of the third term and also examine the instructors’ predictions from the student responses. The research is a descriptive study. The data of the study developed after taking expert opinions were collected via interviews consisting of four multiple-choice and one open-ended questions. Semi-structured interviews were carried out individually with randomly chosen eight students who volunteered and had time for the interviews. Moreover, just after the questions were asked to the students, face-to face interviews were carried out with five experienced instructors teaching general/basic physics courses at the same faculty. It can be stated that there were students who could not calculate the magnitude of the displacement vector (46.8%), who did not know the component method of vector addition (60.7%), who did not have any idea about the qualities of equal vectors (26.6%), and who could not calculate the components of a vector (25.3%). Thus, the study revealed that this ratio of students should be considered seriously and significantly. Moreover, the findings revealed that 54.4% of the students could not calculate the magnitude of the differences of two vectors correctly, 55.7% of them could not draw them accurately, and this ratio is quite high. The instructors’ predictions about the responses of their students who they teach general physics reveal that they do not know the opinions of their students about vectors adequately.
