Pollution Haven Hypothesis and Validity in Turkish Economy (An Empirical Study on the Period 1990-2019)

According to the pollution haven hypothesis production intensifies in industires called dirty industries in developing countries, especially under the influence of foreign direct investment. On the other hand, clean industry investments gain momentum in developed countries. In this study, it was aimed to test the validity of the pollution haven hypothesis from the point of view of the Turkish economy. A model has been created in which carbon dioxide emission is determined as an indicator of pollution using the ARDL method. According to the results of the research, in which annual data for the period 1990-2019 were used, the pollution haven hypothesis is not valid for the Turkish economy. No cointegration was found between the pollution indicator and foreign direct investments.
