Examination of STEAM Attitudes of Primary School Students in Terms of Different Variables (Ankara Example)

The economic development and changes in the world bring along new business lines and different needs. It has enabled the employees of STEAM-based companies to use the existing knowledge in solving current problems, to think critically, to make a difference in their studies and to develop their 21st century skills. The need for well-equipped staff in the STEAM field has also demonstrated the importance of STEAM training. The aim of the research is to examine primary school students' STEAM attitudes in terms of "gender, family income, having a personal computer, frequency of using technological tools and more popular course" variables. The sample of the research consists of 287 students, 146 girls and 141 boys, studying in the 2nd, 3rd and 4th grades of schools in Ankara. The data obtained in the research were collected with the "Personal Information Form" and the "STEAM Attitude Scale for Primary School Students (İÖSTÖ)" scale. Explanatory statistics were applied to the obtained data; It was determined that primary school students had a moderate attitude in the science, art, mathematics and engineering sub-dimensions, they had a high-level attitude in the technology sub-dimension, there was a significant difference in favor of female students in the arts sub-dimension, and male students in the mathematics and engineering sub-dimensions. It was seen that there was a significant difference in favor of students with a computer. Within the framework of the results reached in the research; Teachers can be trained on STEAM so that they can affect students' STEAM attitudes positively, and the reasons for the negative effects of STEAM attitudes can be investigated by conducting qualitative studies. The results can be compared by performing similar studies on different sample groups.

Dünyada yaşanan ekonomik gelişim ve değişimler beraberinde yeni iş kollarını ve farklı gereksinimleri beraberinde getirmektedir. STEAM tabanlı şirketlerin çalışanlarının, var olan bilgileri güncel problemlerin çözümünde kullanmalarını, eleştirel düşünerek çalışmalara farklılık katmalarını ve 21. yüzyıl becerilerini geliştirmelerini sağlamıştır. STEAM alanında donanımlı çalışana ihtiyaç duyulması da STEAM eğitiminin önemini ortaya koymuştur. Araştırma ile ilkokul öğrencilerinin STEAM tutumlarının “cinsiyet, aile gelir durumu, kişisel bilgisayara sahip olma, teknolojik araçları kullanma sıklığı ve daha fazla sevilen ders” değişkenleri açısından incelenmesi amaçlanmıştır. Araştırmanın örneklemini Ankara ilindeki okulların 2, 3 ve 4. sınıflarında öğrenim gören 146 kız, 141 erkek olmak üzere toplam 287 öğrenci oluşturmaktadır. Araştırmada elde edilen veriler “Kişisel Bilgi Formu” ve “İlkokul Öğrencileri İçin STEAM Tutum Ölçeği (İÖSTÖ)”ölçeği ile toplanmıştır. Ulaşılan verilere açımlayıcı istatistikler uygulanmış; ilkokul öğrencilerinin bilim, sanat, matematik ve mühendislik alt boyutlarında orta düzey tutuma sahip oldukları teknoloji alt boyutunda ise yüksek düzey tutuma sahip oldukları, sanat alt boyutunda kız öğrencilerden yana, matematik ve mühendislik alt boyutlarında ise erkek öğrencilerden yana anlamlı farklılık olduğu, bilim alt boyutunda kişisel bilgisayarı olan öğrencilerden yana anlamlı bir farklılığın olduğu görülmüştür. Araştırmada ulaşılan sonuçlar çerçevesinde; öğretmenlerin STEAM konusunda eğitimler alarak öğrencilerin STEAM tutumlarını olumlu yönde etkileyebilmeleri sağlanabileceği, nitel çalışmalar gerçekleştirilerek STEAM tutumunun olumsuz yönde etkilenmesi nedenleri araştırılabilir. Farklı örneklem grupları üzerinde benzer çalışmalar gerçekleştirilerek sonuçlar karşılaştırılabilir.
